Fraser Island & The Whitsundays

Finally the weather has taken a turn for the better and it’s come at exactly the right time. We’re in Airlie Beach at the moment after having done a 2 night boat trip of the Whitsunday Islands. We chose a medium size boat called Avatar which worked perfectly for us – all our meals were provided and we had a great bunch of people so we had a lot of fun. We spent yesterday morning on Whitehaven beach which is one of the most beautiful beaches in the world and I definitely wouldn’t disagree with that. White sand, clear seas and blue sky – it really was paradise. We did a bit of snorkelling but we had to wear stinger suits just in case! Didn’t see anything too exciting in the water but from the boat we saw a giant turtle!

Before Whitsundays we were at Hervey Bay which was where we did our Fraser Island trip from. The trip was 2 days, 3 nights. There was a group of 13 of us so we had two vans. The night before we left we had to order all our food so we had a huge amount of meat for a BBQ on the first night, spag bol on the second and we still managed to have heaps left over for a picnic/BBQ for lunch on the third day. We ate better there than we have the whole time we’ve been away! (Except Fiji maybe!)

Me and Abs arent old enough to drive over here which was a bit of a shame because it looked like fun! We got stuck in the sand a few times and we all had to jump out and push until we were free. The “roads” were sooo bumpy we were all flying around in the back banging our heads and holding on for our lives!

Before we left we were given briefing of places to go and things to see on Fraser. We had a swim with lots of little turtles in Lake Allom, and attempted a swim in the freezing waters of Lake Birrabeen. We walked up to Indian Head where there were great views of the beach and you could look right down into the turquoise waters and see huge sting rays swimming around. No wonder we weren’t allowed to swim in the sea on Fraser! As well as the rays we also had to be aware of the dingoes which were wandering round the campsite ready to pounce on any scrap of food lying around!

Fraser Island and the Whitsundays are definitely the highlights of Australia so far.. hope there’s more to come as we go up to Mission Beach and Cairns.

The whole thing sounds idyllic. I want to go to a beautiful beach too. Though swimming with stingrays and turtles doesn’t sound too appealing to me.xxxx

  2. Dad says:

Google Earth is fantastic! I’m following your trip and it’s almost like being there! Well, nearly. Some of the streets have street level photos so you can drive along them, and you can zoom down so close to Fraser Island and the Whitsunday Islands and see individual trees and ripples in the water! Fab! And doesn’t the sea look blue! Lots of love Dad xxx
